Allergies, colds and the flu

Allergies, colds and the flu

With fall now taking over, people's allergies have started up again.  Runny noses, sniffling, post-nasal drip, itchy eyes...all uncomfortable.  Some have also been noticing a recurrence of the common cold or even the flu.

What they all have in common is an immune system that is not performing correctly.

If an immune system is stressed, it will not combat the cold or flu virus effectively.  Bacterial infections may also result, leading the patient's MD to prescribe an antibiotic.  This in turn will lower the body's immune response even lower.  So what is a person to do?

One thing to check is for any interference between the immune system and the nervous system.  Any alterations to this vital communication system will lead to dysfunction and weakened immune system.  Chiropractors do this by removing subluxations along the spinal system.  This corrective maneuver enables the nervous system to better express itself, and in turn the other connected systems, in this case the immune system, can also function at an increased level lessening the chance of outside infection.

With allergies, the opposite is happening.  The body's immune system is hyperactive and is responding incorrectly to environmental stimuli.  Again, check the body for subluxation so that we can effectively rule out the nervous system's role in the allergic reaction.  If subluxations are contributing to the allergies, the patient will notice them subside and ease up with the adjustments.  Please note, sometimes this takes time, as the body may have been in this altered state for quite some time and does not always 'switch off' the problem that quickly.

In the above cases, herbal remedies may be used to assist the body in symptom control, or better yet, moving the body towards a state of improved health and function.  Multi-vitamins, antioxidants, omega 3s and probiotics are all KEY in improving overall health.  With immunity, vitamin d and probiotics play a HUGE role.  Their effects on overall immunity and health are profound.  Do not forget these nutrients!  I usually recommend an adult daily intake of 3000 i.u. vitmain D at a MINIMUM.  We often dose people higher depending on the situation.  (Kids are dosed lower...usually at 1000 i.u. per day)

Probiotics should be taken at a minimum of 10-12 billion cfu per day for adults and 5 billion cfu per day for kids.  I highly recommend UAS labs Multi-Flora Plus to my patients.
